- Old No. 9 Highway
The Old No. 9 Highway roughly follows the path of the former San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Northern Railway. Though only 20 miles long, this historic scenic route has many delightful sights to see along the way, including rolling hills, wildflowers and oak trees that dot the landscape. Start your journey here in Comfort at Ranch Road 473, then continue on to Sisterdale, ultimately winding your way through Grapetown to end at Highway 290. The road also passes through Kerrville and Fredericksburg, where you can stop and explore local shops, restaurants and museums. During your journey, make sure to take in the amazing views at Block Creek Natural Area and check out Old Tunnel State Park to learn about the wildlife living there.
- Skyline Drive
This drive takes you through the scenic hills of New Braunfels and offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region. One of the highlights is the beautiful Canyon Lake, which is located at the start of the route. On your adventure, you will pass through several small towns, including Gruene and Wimberley. Gruene is known for its historic district, which features several restored buildings from the 19th century, including the Gruene Hall, which is Texas' oldest dance hall. Wimberley, on the other hand, is known for its natural beauty and is home to several parks and nature preserves.
- Gruene-Fredericksburg-Bandera Loop
This route begins in the town of Gruene, known for its historic buildings and lively music scene. From there, you will drive west on Highway 46 toward Fredericksburg. This stretch of the drive offers stunning views of the rolling hills and is known for its wildflowers in the spring. Stop in Fredericksburg to explore its German heritage and wineries, and then continue on to Bandera, the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” Bandera is also home to the Frontier Times Museum, which showcases the history of the American West.
- Willow City Loop
For some of the most spectacular wildflower viewing in the Lone Star state, follow the Willow City Loop, north of Comfort. This breathtaking 13-mile scenic drive takes you on a gravel, unpaved road through the rugged Texas Hill Country landscape. The iconic loop provides the quintessential Texas wildflower display, where you're surrounded by blue, yellow, red, purple and pink perennials. The route begins in the town of Fredericksburg and winds its way through fields of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and other wildflowers. Along the way, you will see stunning views of the surrounding hills, as well as quaint ranches and historic homesteads. - Swiss Alps of Texas
The scenic drive that's dubbed the Swiss Alps of Texas gets its name from the rugged canyons and valleys that you'll see on your journey. Elevations range from 1,400 to 2,400 feet above sea level. The route begins in the town of Leakey and winds its way through the Frio River Canyon, offering stunning views of the river and the surrounding hills. Along the way, you will see towering limestone cliffs, cascading waterfalls and lush vegetation. The drive also passes through several charming towns, including Utopia and Vanderpool, where you can stop and explore local shops and restaurants.
