Cave Without a Name in Boerne, Texas
Some of the Texas Hill Country's most jaw-dropping sights might just be hidden 80 feet underground. It's true! Beneath the picturesque rolling landscape above ground, the Balcones Fault running between Austin and San Antonio houses immense caves and caverns. Cave Without a Name is one of these natural, living caverns, and some say it's the most beautiful. Why not decide for yourself?
Located in Boerne, about 30 minutes from Hotel Giles, Cave Without a Name is a commercially operated show cave and has been open for public tours since 1939. What's with the name? Well, in 1940, the cave's proprietors held a naming contest. A young boy suggested the cave was too pretty to have a name. And he won the $250 cash prize!
Visitors access Cave Without a Name by descending 126 steps to about 80 feet below the surface where the cave naturally maintains a year-round temperature of 66 degrees. Deep inside are spectacular formations that have appeared over millions of years – stalactites, stalagmites, delicate soda straws, cave drapery, unique flowstones, rimstone dams and more. The one-hour guided tour takes adventurous visitors through six major cavernous rooms to experience nature's artwork, all visible thanks to brilliant lighting and accessed via easy walkways.
Of these six rooms, the Queen's Throne Room is host to memorable events such as concerts, weddings, conferences and more. Although temporarily suspended, such events are provided the perfect acoustical setting because of the three large solution domes on the ceiling of this room, not to mention the impressive natural backdrop that provides a truly unforgettable experience.
Plan ahead; the cave is currently requiring reservations. Photography in the cave is encouraged to capture one of nature's most magnificent masterpieces. During your visit, be sure to also check out the gift shop, discover the mining sluice, walk the labyrinth, see a geo saw in action and much more.
