Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm
We might be a little biased, but there's nothing quite like the majestic beauty of the Texas Hill Country. When you stay with us at Hotel Giles, we encourage you to get outdoors and get in tune with the natural surroundings – rolling hills, rivers and creeks, abundant wildlife habitat. One of the best places to learn about our land, water and wildlife and how to protect and nurture them is the Cibolo Center for Conservation in nearby Boerne, Texas.
The Cibolo started in 1988 with a group of friends working together to clean up a creek. In the 30+ years since, the nature center has embraced a commitment to the stewardship of our natural resources and evolved into a model of conservation education in Texas. Each year, the Cibolo welcomes more than 100,000 visitors for educational programming and outdoor activities, which are free to the public.
There are two campuses encompassing a combined 160 acres to explore: the Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm. The Cibolo Nature Center will help you better appreciate and connect with the transformative power of nature on this 100-acre property. Start at the Visitors Center to grab trail maps and field guides that will assist in your outdoor exploration. Go wading in the Cibolo Creek or simply enjoy sitting on its banks under the canopy of tall Cypress trees. Take a hike on more than six miles of trails through several distinct ecosystems, accessible to hikers of all levels. Enjoy the abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat as you explore the Cibolo's native prairie, spring-fed marsh and other delicate landscapes.
Herff Farm was one of Boerne's first settlements by European immigrants back in 1854. It was acquired by the Cibolo in 2007, and today is a vibrant gathering place for outdoor learning. The property covers 60 acres where the Cibolo and Menger creeks converge. Much of the educational programming is held in the historic barn and adjacent amphitheater – from preschool classes to adult workshops. The impressive community gardens show you what is possible to grow in the Texas Hill Country terrain. If you're visiting on a Saturday, be sure to stop by the farmers market for delicious produce from local growers, as well as a variety of vendors and live music from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
